The Flickr for Words

Scribd has rocketed to the top of Alexa's movers and shakers listing,  moving up 60,000% in the last week or so. Their most recent weekly rank is 1,984. The site allows authors to easily upload PDF, Word, PowerPoint, XLS, text and other file formats to the site. All content on the site can be shared and reproduced with limited rights, under a Creative Commons license. Currently, there is no advertising on the site, nor are there any costs associated with uploading or downloading images. A document printing and delivery service is available, giving Scribd an opportunity to bring in some revenues and pay royalties to its authors. Reminds me of the DeviantART business model, which currently has over 32 million images online.

Take a quick look at the site, and you'll find well over 8,000 documents. It will be interesting to see how they deal with classifying and filtering content, as searching through just 100,000 medium-sized documents properly will be significantly harder than searching through millions of images.
